Simon's Town Historical Society

The Simon's Town Historical Society was established in 1960 to collect information and artefacts with a view to establishing a Museum in Simon's Town. This aim was realised and the Simon's Town Museum opened in 1977.

Vice Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson On 21 May 1776 Horatio Nelson, then a midshipman being invalided back to England from the East Indies, arrived in Simon's Bay aboard the H.M.S. Dolphin. The ship remained here for a month and it is probable that Nelson did come ashore during this period.

Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 English journalist, poet and writer of "The Jungle Books", Just So Stories" and "Kim". His patriotic interest in Army, Sea and Empire led to many visits to Simon's town and stories about its characters.

Hospital Lane The lane ran alongside the Royal Naval Hospital which was built in 1813 on the site of Constantia, one of the first dwellings in Simon's Town. The first operation using the Lister Antiseptic Technique in South Africa was successfully performed here in 1872. The hospital building and the Hospital Terrace alongside currently accommodate offices and Naval residences.

Wikboom Lane Pieter Andries Wikboom (1775-1840) emigrated from Sweden in 1806. By trade a butcher, baker and wine merchant, he served as Wardmaster in 1817 and as member of the Court of Resident and Heemraden in 1826. Wikboom Lane leads to Juter Square named after RCH Juter, a town councillor from 1951 to 1983. A cluster of houses belonging to residents who were sadly displaced by the Group Areas Act in 1967 was situated in this vicinity.

Alfred Lane Originally known as Hablutzel Lane, was renamed after the Royal Alfred Lodge of Freemasons which was then situated on the upper left hand side. Prince Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria visited Simon's Town in 1860 as midshipman on HMS Euryalus and in 1867 as Captain of HMS Galatea The Nooral Islam mosque founded 1878 and rebuilt in 1926 is situated at the top of Alfred Lane
