First traffic lights in England. The traffic lights were originally located on a small island in the middle of Princess Square, Wolverhampton. They were installed initially as an experiment on 5th November 1927. The experiment was a great success and traffic lights became a permanent installation in October of the following year. There are still traffic lights at this road junction today supported by the traditional black and white poles and the plaque on a nearby building
