Edward A. Perry, Florida’s 14th Governor, was born March 15, 1831 in Richmond, Massachusetts. He attended Yale, taught briefly in Alabama, and moved to Pensacola, where he was admitted to the bar in 1853. He fought in the Civil War, was twice wounded, and rose from private to Brigadier General. During Governor Perry’s administration from 1885 to 1889, Florida adopted a new Constitution and established a State Board of Education. He died in Pensacola, October 15, 1889.
