John Bartow Wiles, Jr. was born in 1886 and as a young man relocated to Deerfield Beach from Griffin, Georgia. He teamed with other farmers to divert water, flood and drain fields during periods of water fluctuations. He served on the city commission for eight years, was charter president of the Lions Club and helped secure and develop what is now Pioneer Park. He was also a charter member of the Gold Coast Shrine Club. On the city commission, he promoted the building and improvement of roads. He supported additional medical services through involvement with the North Broward Hospital District, volunteered for the Salvation Army and was a founding member of the Deerfield Beach Historical Society. John Bartow Wiles, Jr. died in 1999.
