Percy L. Hedgecock was born in 1916 in North Carolina. After operating a construction business he came to Florida, first settling in Miami in 1952 and then moving to Brevard County in 1956. In August 1957, after the City of Satellite Beach was incorporated, Hedgecock became the first mayor and was elected to eight consecutive terms. While serving on the County School Board he negotiated the sale of an 80-acre tract on which was built a complete K-12 public school complex. He was also instrumental in the county’s acquisition of the only oceanfront park in the city. Hedgecock traveled to Southeast Asia and the Soviet Union to seek Americans missing in action from the Vietnam War and to promote international cooperation. He was a member of service organizations, including the Lions Club and the Brevard County United Appeal. He assisted with the founding of Brevard Engineering College and served on the Board of Trustees of the Florida Institute of Technology. Percy L. Hedgecock died in 1987.
