This oak tree was planted on the 28th April 2018 - International Workers Memorial Day - to commenorate those killed or injured as a result of an explosion at Rainham Chemical Works, Ferry Lane in 1916. Since the declaration of war in 1914 the factory had been producing Picric Acid (TNT) for the war effort when, on 14th September 1916, a fire broke out in the building's No 2 Drying Stove. The resulting explosion completely destroyed the factory and damaged a number of nearby buildings, including the Three Crowns Inn. Three workers were killed instataneously (sic), and four succumbed to their injuries over the following days. A further sixty-nine employees and local residents suffered varying degrees of injury.
