The unfortunate Alice Pitt was killed by lightning on Wednesday 21 June 1865 whilst on her wedding tour. She was resting during an attempt to climb the Schilthorn Alp, near Mürren in Switzerland. She was buried in the Montbijou Cemetery in Berne, and the slab of rock she had been resting on when she was killed, was placed on the grave.
