This plaque marks the site of the District of Columbia north-east boundary stone no. 1 originally placed here 1791-1792

The Residence Act of July 16, 1790, as amended March 3, 1791, authorized President George Washington to select a 100-square-mile site for the national capital. This was a diamond marked by 40 stones. This stone was accidentally bulldozed and removed during the construction of the storefront in September 1952. See http://www.boundarystones.org/ for more details.
