Comte de Frontenac. Né au château de Saint-Germain en 1622, Louis de Baude, Comte de Frontenac, était membre de la noblesse d'épée et filleul du roi Louis XIII. Soldat et courtisan, il fut nommé gouverneur général de la Nouvelle-France in 1672; il favorisa l'expansion de la colonie en établissant des postes de traite à l'intérieur de l'Amérique du Nord. Le premier, le fort Frontenac, construit en 1673, fut le berceau de la ville de Kingston au Canada. Accusé d'abus de pouvoir dans les affaires civiles, Frontenac fut rappelé en 1682, mais il réintégra ses fonctions de gouverneur sept ans plus tard. Durant ce nouveau mandat, il défendit avec succès la Nouvelle-France contre les attaques de la confédération iroquoise et des Anglais. Décédé à Québec in 1698, il y fut inhumé dans l'église des Récollets. -------- Born in 1622 at the chateau of St. Germain, Louis de Buade, Comte de Frontenac, was a member of the feudal aristocracy and a godson of King Louis XIII. A soldier and courtier, he was appointed governor general of New France in 1672 and promoted the colony's expansion through the establishment of fur trading posts in the interior of North America. The first of these, Fort Frontenac, was constructed in 1673 and was the first settlement on the site of Kingston, Canada. Accused of abuse of power in civil affairs, Frontenac was recalled in 1682 but he obtained reappointment seven years later. During this second term he successfully defended New France against attacks by the Iroquois Confederacy and the English.
