Marché aux chevaux. En 1641, Louis XIII autorise l’établissement d’un marché aux chevaux près du nouveau marché aux porcs de Saint-Victor, sur l’emplacement de cette partie du boulevard Saint-Marcel. Mais le marché n’ouvre effectivement qu’après 1660, les mercredis et samedis, le matin pour les porcs et le soir pour les chevaux, mules et ânes; le dimanche se tient le marché aux chiens et aux voitures. On y donne le supplice de l’estrapade jusqu’en 1776. Peu après, le marché devenu entreprise publique, est agrandi. En 1857 a lieu le percement du boulevard : on y vend alors 50 000 chevaux sous les ans. Le nouveau marché, établi en 1877 au sud de ce trottoir, disparaît en 1908 la bicyclette et le moteur vont supplanter le cheval.

English translation: "Horse market. In 1641 Louis XIII authorized the establishment of a horse market near the new Saint-Victor pig market on the site of this part of Saint-Marcel Boulevard.
