Leonard Ellis Leonard was the first civilian killed on British soil during WWI during the German bombardment of the town on 16th December 1914. Leonard worked as a porter here which was the Clare and Hunt Chemist shop. Leonard died at the corner of South Street outside the shop aged 47.
