James Martin Stagg CB OBE FRSE 30th June 1900 - 23rd June 1975 Was raised and schooled in Dalkeith. He graduated in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy from Edinburgh University and after a short time as teacher joined the Meteorological Office. Appointed in November 1943 as Chief Meteorologist to the operation Overlord Planning Team, Stagg was responsible for advising General Eisenhower on weather conditions. As a result of his expertise, determination and accurate forecasting the Allied invasion of Europe was delayed by 24 hours thus ensuring the success of the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944 and changing the course of history
