The Norfolk Arms Disaster 1st April 1829. This plaque is located on the former site of The Norfolk Arms, where an appalling disaster took place during the depression of the cotton trade. The catastrophe occurred when almost 700 operatives met to discuss a threat by employers to reduce their wages. 29 men and women were killed, with many more injured, when the floor of the room collapsed, leaving the unfortunate victims to crash into the cellar.
