This plaque was unveiled on the 1st July 1995 by the Mayor of Ellesmere Port and Nelson, Councillor Stewart Hayward to commemorate the bicentenary of the opening of the Wirral Branch of the Ellesmere Canal and the birth of Ellesmere Port.

This milepost was donated by Narrow Boat Magazine on 6th December 1984 to commemorate ten years of work at Ellesmere Port and is dedicated to the founders of the North West Museum of Inland Navigation, Harry Arnold, Peter Proud, Tony Lewery, Dr David Owen and Edward Paget-Tomlinson

Tony Lewery, Peter Froud, Dr David Owen, Harry Arnold, Tony Hirst (first director). Founder members 1970 - Edward Paget-Tomlinson (absent). To commemorate Trustees, Staff and Volunteers who gave their time and expertise in order to establish a museum at Ellesmere Port. The museum was founded solely by volunteers who were known as the North Western Museum of Inland Navigation (NWMIN). This became known as the Boat Museum Society (BMS) which, continued to support the museum. The society is now the Waterways Museum Society which continues to support the National Waterways Museum at Ellesmere Port.
