Dr. Howard W. Thurman was born in Daytona Beach in 1899. He served as dean of the Chapel at Morehouse College, Atlanta; Howard University, Washington, D.C. and Boston University, Boston Massachusetts. During his career, he influenced Mahatma Ghandi, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Andrew Young and Vernon Jordan. Thurman was the founder of the Fellowship Church of All Peoples in San Francisco. Among his 22 books are Jesus and the Disinherited and The Luminous Darkness, an essay blending science and social criticism. Dr. Thurman died in 1981.
