The Spaceship

thing and structure

Aged unknown

A Futuro house, or Futuro Pod, is a round, prefabricated house designed by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen, of which fewer than 100 were built during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The shape, reminiscent of a flying saucer, and the structure's airplane hatch entrance has made the houses sought after by collectors. The Futuro is composed of fiberglass-reinforced polyester plastic, polyester-polyurethane, and poly(methyl methacrylate), measuring 4 metres (13 feet) high and 8 metres (26 feet) in diameter.

Commemorated on 1 plaque

The Spaceship This plaque is to commemorate the Futuro structure commonly known as "The Spaceship" previously located on this park. The Structure was originally imported from Scandanavia and erected adjacent to Apsley Rd by development underwriters in 1971 and used to advertise the subdivision of Burrendah. "The Spaceship" was moved from Apsley Rd to Glennon Park in 1971 and donated to the City of Canning in 1981. In 1996 the structure was removed from this site after being donated to the Barking Gecko Theatre Company. Further details regarding "The Spaceship" are available at the City of Canning Riverton library - local history section.
