Kenny Davenport (1862-1908) playing here at Pikes Lane Ground for Bolton Wanderers scored the first ever league goal against Derby County at 3.47pm on Saturday 8th September 1888.

For over a century, it had been thought that an own goal on 31 minutes by Aston Villa’s Gershom Cox, playing against Wolverhampton Wanderers, was the first Football League goal.However, In 2013 research by football author Mark Metcalf and librarian Robert Boyling revealed that the kick off in that game was later than originally thought (3:30) putting Cox's goal at just past 4pm.
