SONACS. In 1957, allegedly to reduce the cost of a new road bridge at this place, national and local authorities combined to bring about the abandonment of the then derelict canal. Through the vision, vigilance and determination of the Stratford upon Avon Canal Society and the Inland Waterways Association that attempt was defeated. Between 1961 and 1964, under the auspices of the National Trust, volunteers laboured and thus restored the waterway to navigability. It was the first canal to be so rescued and revived. The waterway was ceremonially reopened on 11th July 1964 by H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
