Peer Plaques in 2008 was the first of three artworks commissioned by Burnley Borough Council under the Burnley Public art project.Peer Plaques features a selection of quotes from Burnley residents in response to the question, "What is your first thought when you think about your neighbourhood?".The artworks are the outcome of a two-year residency in which an artist-architect team made up of artist Kevin Carter and civic Architects has prompted discussion about the present and future effects of regeneration, specifically Housing Market Renewal (HMR) in Burnley. The project aims to reflect local residents' experience of HMR and to give residents a voice outside the Council’s consultation process, a chance to directly express their thoughts, as part of a temporary public art work located within their community.
