Émile Durkheim. Né à Epinal le 15 avril 1858, reçu en 1879 à l'Ecole Normale Supérieure, Emile Durkheim achève sa formation par un voyage d'études en Allemagne, et obtient dès 1887 la création d'un cours de science social et de pédagogie à la faculté des lettres de Bordeaux. Il se consacre alors à l'enseignement, sans perdre de vue son idée directrice majeure: ériger la sociologie en science autonome. En 1898 paraît "l'Année Sociologique", qui fait de lui un chef d'école incontesté, entouré de brillants collaborateurs. Appelé à la Sorbonne pour occuper la chaire de science de l'éducation, il habite cet immeuble entre 1902 et 1912. En 1913, sa chaire s'intitule enfin "Science de l'éducation et sociologie". Profondément affecté par la guerre, où il perd son fils, Durkheim meurt le 15 novembre 1917.

Born in Epinal April 15 1858, received in 1879 to the Ecole Normale Supérieure, Émile Durkheim completed his training with a study trip to Germany, and received in 1887 the creation of a social science courses and pedagogy at Faculty of Arts of Bordeaux. He then devoted himself to teaching, without losing sight of its major guideline idea: build sociology autonomous science. In 1898 appeared "l'Année Sociologique", making it an undisputed leader school, surrounded by brilliant staff. Called to the Sorbonne to occupy the chair of educational science, he resided in the building between 1902 and 1912. In 1913, his chair finally entitled "Science of Education and Sociology." Deeply affected by the war, where he lost his son, Durkheim died November 15, 1917.
