Baily was also a major figure in the early history of the Royal Astronomical Society, as one of the founders and as the president four times.

Discoverer of "Baily's Beads", a phenomenon of solar eclipses. Compiler of several star catalogues for the RAS. He is buried and his memorial is in St Mary's Church, Thatcham
