He immigrated to the United States in 1836, where he was ordained, joined the Redemptorist order, and became the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia in 1852. In Philadelphia, Neumann founded the first Catholic diocesan school system in the US. Canonized in 1977, he is the only male US citizen to be named a saint.

St. John Neumann. Here lie the remains of the first male American saint, canonized in 1977. Born 1811 in Bohemia, he came to the U.S. in 1836. A devoted Redemptorist priest, he became fourth Bishop of Philadelphia, 1852, and set up nation's first Catholic diocesan school system. Died, 1860.
