Frederick Preston Cone, Florida’s 27th Governor, was born September 28, 1871 in Benton, Columbia County. He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1892, practicing at Lake City and was instrumental in bringing tobacco growing to the area. He was a banker and served in the Florida Senate from 1907 to 1913 and, as president of the Senate in 1911, led the fight for uniform elementary school textbooks throughout the state. During his administration as Florida Governor from 1937 to 1941, drivers’ licenses were established to finance a state highway patrol. When his term ended, he returned to Lake City, where he died July 28, 1948.
