Aged unknown
William Flemming was born in Ireland and immigrated to America with his parents. By the mid-1800s he had purchased 4,000 acres of land along the Halifax River, which encompassed 3.79 square miles of the present site of Holly Hill. In 1876 he encouraged 15 families to settle on the land. The families built sawmills, homes, churches and schools. Flemming named his settlement Holly Hill in honor of the Irish coastal town where he was born.
