William Thomas Howard was born June 2, 1911 in Fort Myers. Known to his friends as Tommy, Howard chaired committees that selected, acquired and secured state funding for the University of South Florida branch in Fort Myers. As a result of his efforts, the Florida Gulf Coast University opened in Fort Myers in 1982. Howard served on committees dealing with higher education in Florida and was awarded a Doctorate of Humane Letters from the University of South Florida. William Thomas Howard died in 1995.
