Dr. Clem C. Benton was born in 1898 in Orange County, Florida. He was a graduate of Florida A & M College (now University) and Meharry Medical College, in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Benton came to Fort Pierce in 1929 and helped establish the Fort Pierce Memorial Hospital, which opened in 1937. He served on educational committees, and was a trustee for Bethune Cookman College, Daytona Beach, and the Indian River Community College of Fort Pierce. His civic, professional and humanitarian awards included the A.H. Robbins Citizenship Award from the Florida Medical Association in 1974. Dr. Benton died in 1982.
