Matthias Day, Jr., born in 1821, founded Daytona Beach. Sometime in the mid-1800s he arrived in what is now the City of Daytona Beach and in 1870 returned and began to purchase land. Under his direction, the land was surveyed and platted. The name Daytona means "Day’s Little Town." Matthias Day, Jr. died in 1904.
