Henry L. Twine was born in 1923 in Tallahassee, Florida and spent his adult life working for the betterment of the African-American community in St. Augustine. He served as president of the local NAACP chapter during the 1960s Civil Rights movement, and was a member of the Democratic Party’s Executive Committee. During his three terms on the St. Augustine City Commission he gained a reputation as a consensus builder. He served two terms as the city’s first African-American vice mayor. Henry L. Twine died in 1994.
