The West Gate. 1800 years ago the Romans built a wall with four gateways around the market town Noviomanus Reginorum (Chichester). This is the site of the west gate, which stood until 1773. From here Roman roads led to Venta Belgarum (Winchester) and the Palace at Fishbourne. In the medieval period, the route became the main highway to Portsmouth.
