Wolverhampton Tin Plate Workers Society est 1802. This civic centre is built on the site of 'horse fair', where in 1819 five members of the Tin Plate Workers Society (now the craft sector of TASS) were apprehended by the Bow Street Runners and subsequently transported to Tasmania for the crime of belonging to a union. This history shows the part played by men of Wolverhampton in forming a craft union many years before the Tolpuddle Martyrs were transported.
