Samuel Pepys worked as Clerk of the Navy Office and lived in official lodgings beside the office. The office and the house in which he and his wife lived was opposite the church of St Olave, Hart Street. He and his wife used to attend the church service on Sundays, where they used to sit in the official Navy Office pew – Pepys referred to in his diary as ‘our pew’.
