This plaque records the site of Sutton colliery opened 1874 by the Skegby Colliery Lime & Brick Co to replace Skegby colliery situated three quarters of a mile to the west. Originally named Brierley colliery after Staffordshire miners brought from there to sink the shafts. Since 1947 some 15 million tons of coal were mined from this colliery. in 1908 over 548,000 tons were produced by the 942 men then employed.on February 21st 1957 6 men lost their lives and 15 were seriously injured in an underground explosion. The colliery closed on august 25th 1989.
