English translation: Pauluspoort The site of Saint Paul's Abbey, founded in 1050, was closed off from the outside world by a wall. It was only through the gates that the abbey grounds could be entered. The original gate was at the height of the current entrance gate on Hamburgerstraat. In the 16th century, a new gate was built directly opposite the Lange Nieuwstraat. After the abolition of the abbey in 1580, the city built Korte Nieuwstraat over the abbey site in 1619. The gate was only demolished in 1838 during the renovation of the then courthouse. The location of the gate is indicated in the pavement. [AWS Translate]
