Edward Mantagu, Earl of Manchester 1602-1671 During the English Civil War, Montagu commanded the Parliamentarian army that laid siege to Lincoln Castle. The Royalists launched 'michty stones' at the attackers from the castle walls. The four-day siege ended on 6 May 1644, with over 900 Royalists captured of killed. The victorious Parliamentarian soldiers rampaged through the upper city, smashing monuments and stained glass in the cathedral.
