This is the site of the royal palace, occupied by King William I, styled William the Lion, and here his son Alexander II of Scotland, was born, 24th August, 1198.

Near to this spot stood the Blackfriars Monastery founded in 1231 by King Alexander II. From the monastery gardens King Robert III viewed the Battle of the Clans fought on the North Inch in 1396. King James I of Scotland was murdered within the monastery on the 20th February 1437.
