Wikidata WikipediaCorporal Kenneth Horsfield GC (1920-1944) of the Manchester Regiment was posthumously awarded the George Cross for '...most conspicuous gallantry' shown in attempting to rescue a comrade trapped and injured by an explosion in Italy in 1945. He enlisted in 1939 and also served in North Africa. He is buried in Bari War Cemetery.

Corporal Kenneth Horsfield GC 1920-1944 Awarded the George Cross (GC), the highest award for conspicuous courage out of battle. Corporal Horsfield was born in Hyde, served in the 9th Manchester Regiment, and was seconded to the SAS. He is the only Tameside citizen to have received this award following his gallant rescue efforts that resulted in his own loss of life in Italy on 18 August 1944. Croft Street was the former family home.
