He is credited with providing exposure and emotional support to numerous then-unknown artists, including Paul Cézanne, Aristide Maillol, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Louis Valtat, Pablo Picasso, André Derain, Georges Rouault, Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh. He was also an avid art collector and publisher, especially of print series by leading artists.

Fontaine des Bagniers Peut-être déjà utilisée à l'époque romaine pour des thermes, son nom même fait référence en langue provençale à des bains. Cette fontaine connut de nombreux remaniements. La source d'eau chaude qui l'alimentait fut captée en 1685 dans une fontaine au centre de la place. Adossée au bâtiment pour faciliter la circulation en 1756 par Georges Vallon, ses eaux chaudes furent détournées vers le Cours Mirabeau et remplacées par des eaux froides. La vasque est de pierre, les mascarons érodés, à têtes d'anges, entre les pilastres à refends, sont de marbre. Le portrait en médaillon de Paul Cézanne est en bronze, dessiné par Auguste Renoir; c'est un don du marchand de tableaux Ambroise Vollard à la ville d'Aix en 1926.
English translation: Fontaine des Bagniers Perhaps already used in Roman times for thermal baths, its very name refers in Provencal language to baths. This fountain underwent many changes. The source of hot water that fed it was captured in 1685 in a fountain in the centre of the square. Backed to the building to facilitate circulation in 1756 by Georges Vallon, his warm waters were diverted to the Mirabeau River and replaced by cold waters. The vat is of stone, the eroded mascarons, with angel heads, between the pilasters with refends, are marble.
