Sharp Cemetery and Rock Creek Baptist Church of Christ. Emily LeSeur Haynes Sharp (1824-1880) came to Texas from Alabama with her first husband, William Glenn Haynes. They settled in Harrison County, where they owned a large amount of land and operated a cotton gin. William Haynes died in 1849, and three years later Emily married Augustus V. Sharp (1810-1868). The Sharp family moved to this area in 1859 and settled along the Lampasas River. When their six-year-old daughter, Sarah, died in 1864, she was buried on the family farm. Four years later Augustus Sharp died and was laid to rest next to his daughter. In 1879 Emily Sharp deeded three acres of land surrounding the graves to establish a community cemetery. The G.W. Dockery family deeded another 1.9 acres for church and school purposes. The Rock Creek Baptist Church of Christ was established in 1882, and in 1905 the members built a sanctuary. Among the interments in the Sharp Cemetery are those of Sharp, Haynes, and Dockery family members; veterans of several wars; and a number of infants and small children. Many of the earliest graves are marked only with field stones, and some are surrounded by 19th-century rock fences. (1991) #4659

McBryde Cemetery. Mancel T. McBryde (1821-1896), who brought his family here from Georgia in the early 1860s, began this family cemetery in 1885 upon the death of his wife, Jane W. Goar McBryde (1826-1885). A farmer and rancher, McBryde selected a site south of his family's home on which to bury his wife. The McBrydes had eight children, four of whom married into the Hoover family. McBryde and Hoover descendants are also interred here, the burials facing east. The oldest McBryde family graves are enclosed in stone. The McBryde Cemetery is maintained by descendants. (1986) #3275

Maxdale Cemetery. Established in the 1860s to serve the rural community of Pleasant Grove, this cemetery is one of the oldest in Bell County. Land for the graveyard was given by Frank N. McBryde, Sr., whose 1883 application for a post office for the community resulted in the name change to Maxdale. The earliest documented grave is that of Louisa Marlar (1849-1867), although an 1863 tombstone marks the site of a grave reinterred here from another location. Others interred here include pioneer settlers and veterans of the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and Korea. (1989) #3264

Joseph Dennis Lands. In 1840 Joseph Dennis (1810-1894) and his wife Isa Seitze migrated from Arkansas to Milam County, Texas. When Bell County was organized in 1850, Dennis served as chairman of the committee that selected Nolan Springs, present Belton, as the county seat. He was the first Bell County Treasurer. Dennis owned several tracts of land in the county and operated a grist mill and lumber yard. He purchased a large tract of land which included this acreage from John Marshall in 1876. This site, known as Elmore Ranch, has been owned continuously by his descendants. (1978) #2856
