Brown plaque № 12064

Circa 1890 10 Queen Street This house is located in the old village of Newhaven, which was merged in 1883 with the naval village of Melville to form the Knysna. The wooden building is reputed to have been built in the 1880’s and brought down from the Millwood Goldfields and is of a rectangular vertical plank structure. Pieter Herwels, a local builder, bought the property in 1930 and lived here with his family in the house, whilst the brick extension to the south became their Mayfair Store. The store area was later used by Harold January, an upholsterer and cobbler. The Alf Fowler family also lived here. Eduard Bruwer took ownership of the property around 1967/8. The Herwel and Fowler families were evicted from the “Onderdorp” in the late 1970’s. In 2003 Rob Hyde Builders bought the property and restored the building.
