Philip Stanhope 4th Earl of Chesterfield (1694-1774) statesman and author lived here
One of a pair of memorials flanking the main entrance to Ranger's (or Chesterfield) House, the other commemorating Garnet, 1st Viscount Wolseley. Both were erected by the London County Council at the suggestion of a local antiquary, A.R. Martin. The use of inscriptions in Portland stone was to preserve the architectural properties of the front of the building, a plaque of the usual colour and design being deemed inappropriate. Ranger's House is now an English Heritage property, inherited - like the London plaque scheme - from the LCC via the GLC in 1986.
