Emma, Lady Hamilton c.1765-1815 lived here 1803-1806

We have been informed by English Heritage that there was an LCC plaque to her at 11 Clarges Street - put up in 1958 and down again five years later when the place was demolished. In September 2014, this plaque was spotted mounted on a wall inside a pub called Sankey's in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. The landlord explained that plaque was much loved at Sankey's. English Heritage confirmed that when buildings are demolished, the plaques are usually returned to whoever sponsored or erected them, but in this case it was given to a lady in Deal, Kent, who apparently displayed it in their garden as part of a collection of Nelson/Lady Hamilton related memorabilia. After the lady died, the plaque moved around a bit, and found its way to Sankey's.
