Ashton Munitions Explosion Nearby was the site of the Hooley Hill Rubber and Chemical Company where on June 13 1917, 5 tons of TNT due to go to the manufacture of shells for the 1st World War exploded destroying the factory and much of the surrounding area. 46 people lost their lives.
