This part of the bank of the River Lune known as Church Brow, from which Turner painted his famous picture of the landscape described by Ruskin in his "Fors Clavigera" as "one of the loveliest scenes in England" was formerly part of the glebelands of Kirkby Lonsdale parish church. It was purchased in 1947 by Alexander Pearson of Kirkby Lonsdale, and given by him to the Parish Council for the use and enjoyment of the public. Now that it belongs to them it is hope that they will do all that they can to ensure its preservation and protection
