Samuel Bowly (1802-1884) anti-slavery campaigner lived here 1878-1884 A revered member of Gloucester Quaker meeting, his life reflected his Quaker principles: Campaigning fearlessly for the abolition of slavery; for the Temperance movement; and as a founder of the Ragged Schools i Gloucester. "A Christian gentleman, who denied himself for the good of others."
