В первые дни Первой мировой войны, 6 (19) августа 1914 года, в районе поселка Краупишкен, у прусского селения Каушен, русским 3-м шефским эскадроном Лейб-Гвардии Конного полка была героически атакована и разгромлена немецкая артиллерийская батарея. Атаку вел командир эскадрона Лейб-Гвардии ротмистр барон П.Н. Врангель, будущий главнокомандующий Белой Русской армией. За сей подвиг ротмистр Врангель был награжден орденом Святого Георгия - первым из офицеров Русской Императорской армии на этой Великой войне 1914-1918 годов.
