Paradise Lane ‘Paradise’ is derived from ‘Parish Dyke’ as it formed the division between Beetham and the ancient Parish of Heversham to which Milnthorpe belonged until the nineteenth century. On the corner is an iron boundary ‘stone’ cast by Day’s Foundry of Kendal in c1820 which refers to the old parishes. The large variety of shrubs and trees along the lane indicates that the hedgerows date from the early Middle Ages c1100. Smithy Lane opposite was laid out in 1815 when common land called Milnthorpe Green, which formerly extended as far as Milnthorpe Square, was enclosed into separate fields by Act of Parliament.
