River Lea The name derives from the Celtic word lug (bright). It marked the 9th-century boundary between Danes (this bank) and Saxons (far bank). Izaak Walton refers to the River Lea in The Compleat Angler. In the 1940s a circus elephant was brought here to drink and damaged the quay.
