Near this spot King Charles's well on 27th April 1646 King Charles I when fleeing from Oxford with two companions on his way to surrender to the Scottish army at Southwell rester to take a last look at London and to ware his horses at the spring with still runs below and has ever since been called Kings Charles's Well
