The Raymond Mays Thomas Raymond Mays CBE (1899-1980) was born at Eastgate House, in Bourne, into a prominent family in the town. One of the foremost local employers, the firm TE Mays was a merchant of animal foodstuffs, hides and skins. Educated at Oundle School, Mays spent his youth racing and went on to found English Racing Automobiles (ERA), and later, British Racing Motors (BRM). His own racing career ended in 1950. The pinnacle of his achievements, and the moment etched in the town’s history, was the BRM team winning the World Grand Prix championship in 1962.
