Philip Ball Pub landlord 1830s-1840s As landlord of the Strugglers Inn, which still stands below the castle walls on Westgate, Ball extended his land by digging out a section of the castle mound. His reckless excavations uncovered the Roman West Gate, which then collapsed, undermining the safety of the walls. He was sent to Lincoln Castle debtors' prison when he refused to pay for the damage.
